Indoor Athletics Stadium

Sabadell, Spain / Cultural Civic / 12,712 m²

Selected, Bienal de arquitectura y urbanismo española BEAU XI 2011

Selected, Catalan Architecture Exhibition, Vallès, COAC 2015

The city of Sabadell has a long and distinguished tradition in track and field sports. So it was a logical and opportune decision to construct this major indoor athletics stadium in the multisport complex in the Sant Oleguer neighborhood on the edge of the city. The intention was not only to promote the sports but also to provide a venue for regional, national, and international competitions.

The stadium is located between the city and the valley on a long and narrow site with a significant slope. These conditions defined the architectural approach, which consisted of adapting the building to the asymmetry of the site and minimizing its impact on the landscape.

The structure consists of a huge continuous roof that rather than following the shape of the track, unfolds along both the longitudinal and transversal axes, emphasizing the relationships between the topography, landscape, and the building.

The central space is filled with natural light and offers views of the surrounding landscape, giving the athletes a sense of freedom as if they were running outdoors.
