University Hospital Sant Joan de Reus
Reus, Tarragona, Spain / Healthcare / 108,760 m²
NAN Award for Outstanding Energy Integration in Architecture 2010
This hospital was conceived as a vital part of the new technological and scientific district that was developed on the outskirts of the city of Reus.
The project is a large horizontal volume that seeks to reduce the impact of its scale by means of two key elements: the sequence of six cantilevered volumes at the back of the building facing the highway, and the sloping facade of the front elevation with pavilions of organic shapes flanking the main entrance.
The inpatient areas are organized around three landscaped courtyards. The patients’ rooms overlook these patios, which supply natural sunlight and ventilation as well as views into the gardens below.
The integration of innovative design strategies, advanced technologies, and contemporary construction methods achieves significant energy savings, establishing the hospital as a model of sustainability.
The principal space is conceived as a “rambla,” the pedestrian promenade characteristic of Catalan cities, which acts as a link between the urban landscape and the interior of the hospital.
