Surgical Unit Expansion
Hospital Germans Trias i Pujol
Badalona, Spain / Healthcare / 6,910 m²
The project expands the surgical unit at Germans Trias i Pujol Hospital, located in Badalona at the foot of the Marina mountain range. Its complex site and the program's restrictions and requirements largely determined its configuration, which takes the form of a large cube emerging between the existing structures.
The proposal is stratified vertically and responds to future growth by creating a volume that provides continuity to the surgical unit, maintains floor levels, and generates new circulation cores. In addition, it adapts formally and materially to the built environment.
The building has a double-skin facade. The continuous windows offer excellent interior light while the exterior skin varies according to the orientation to provide optimal sun protection. Horizontal aluminum slats shade the south facade. On the east facade vertical protection is provided by large modular translucent panels that were assembled in the workshop and installed on-site.
The industrialized structure uses metal frames and hollow-core slabs, topped with a lightweight roof and photovoltaic panels.
The new unit unfolds along the south and east facades of the main building. By prioritizing views of the mountains, the city, and the sea, the surrounding landscape can be enjoyed by the patients, visitors, and staff.
